The Big Plateau Trail in Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers hikers stunning panoramic views of the rugged badlands and rolling prairies. This trail is all about those epic vistas, giving you a chance to soak in the beauty of the park from a higher vantage point. Be prepared for some steep climbs as you make your way up to the plateau, but the payoff at the top is totally worth it. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way, from bison to wild horses, adding an extra touch of excitement to your hike. The trail splits into different trails, so the length of the hike is up to you. We recommend making it a loop hike passing the two prairie dog towns.
Pro Tips:
We recommend parking at Peaceful Valley Ranch for the best access.
A river crossing is required near the beginning, making it great for a hot summer day. The river is typically very slow moving and only shin-high, but make sure to check local conditions prior to crossing.
If you enjoy backpacking or camping, this is one of the most unique camping spots we've experienced! Please note a free permit is required to camp in the backcountry regions of the park and you must be at least a 1/4 mile and out of sights from roads & trails.
