The Herzogstand is one of the most popular panoramic peaks in the Bavarian Prealps, offering breathtaking views over Walchensee and Kochelsee. The hike starts from the Kesselberg Pass and follows a well-maintained mountain trail—about 7 km, 900 meters elevation gain, and 4 hours return. Technically easy, but sturdy footwear is recommended.
The trail is especially popular on weekends, and parking at the pass fills up early, so an early start is advised. Alternatively, you can take the Herzogstand cable car from Walchensee (21 € round trip) to shorten the climb.
Just below the summit, the Herzogstandhaus serves regional Bavarian cuisine—a perfect spot to rest and enjoy the views.
