🌊 Háifoss
🗺️ How to Get There:
From Route 32 in Þjórsárdalur Valley, turn onto the gravel road leading to Háifoss car park, marked near the historical farm of Stöng. The road is rough and requires a 4x4 vehicle, especially in wet or early-season conditions. Drive with caution, deep potholes and rocky sections are common. Once parked, it's a short walk to the upper canyon viewpoint.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Summer and early autumn (June–September) are ideal for safe access and visible trails. The road is usually closed in winter and early spring due to snow and muddy conditions. Autumn brings incredible color contrast in the canyon, while summer offers longer light for golden hour shots.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Late afternoon to evening for side light illuminating the full drop and canyon textures. Avoid midday unless shooting under cloud cover.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to frame the full 122-meter drop and the surrounding cliffs. Telephoto for compressing the waterfall with canyon textures. Drone is very useful here for vertical compositions and cinematic shots along the canyon wall.
Composition ideas:
Shoot from the main viewpoint to get the iconic wide shot with the Fossá river winding through the canyon. Include Granni, the smaller waterfall just beside Háifoss, for context. Use the canyon rim as a leading line or frame the falls with foreground rocks and moss. Drone shots from downstream looking back up the canyon are especially powerful.
