🔥 Kerlingarfjöll

🗺️ How to Get There:
Kerlingarfjöll is accessed via Road 35 (Kjalvegur), which is no longer classified as an F-road, but conditions remain rough, a 4x4 vehicle is still strongly recommended, especially in early summer or after rain. From Gullfoss, head north on Road 35 and turn right at the signed junction for Kerlingarfjöll / Ásgarður, which leads to the mountain resort and trailhead area. From there, it’s a 10–15 minute drive on a mountain track to reach the Hveradalir geothermal zone.

📍 Hveradalir Geothermal Area:
This is the main visual highlight, a surreal landscape of steaming fumaroles, boiling vents, and rust-colored rhyolite hills cut by hiking paths and wooden footbridges. Trails loop around the area for different perspectives. Steep but walkable.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Late June to early September is the only realistic window due to snowpack and road closures. July and August offer the safest trail conditions. Weather is unpredictable, cloud cover is common and often photogenic.

📸 Photography Tips:

  • Best time of day:
Golden hour brings warm, angled light to the colorful terrain. Cloudy days also work well by reducing harsh shadows and enhancing mineral colors.

  • Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for sweeping geothermal scenes. Telephoto to compress ridgelines and isolate fumaroles. Drone is a must, Kerlingarfjöll is one of Iceland’s top aerial locations. ND filters help for long exposure video or smoothing steam motion.

  • Composition ideas:
In Hveradalir, shoot from the trail curves to show depth and scale. Include hikers for human context. Aerial shots reveal painterly abstract textures, look for diagonal ridges, intersecting trails, and rising steam.
