💧 Hraunfossar & Barnafoss

🗺️ How to Get There:
Located in West Iceland, both waterfalls are easily reached via paved roads. From Borgarnes, take Route 1, then turn onto Route 50 and follow 518 toward Húsafell. The site is clearly marked with a large parking area and well-maintained footpaths. No 4x4 required, fully accessible year-round by any vehicle.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Both waterfalls are photogenic in all seasons. Autumn brings colorful birch foliage for contrast. In winter, the frozen edges and snow-covered lava create a surreal scene. Spring and summer offer the strongest flow and brightest river tones.

📸 Photography Tips:

  • Best time of day:
Early morning or late afternoon for directional light. Overcast skies are excellent for soft exposure, especially for long-exposure shots.

  • Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for landscape views, ND filters for smooth water, and a tripod for long exposures. Drone optional, top-down shots and a side drone angle can show the whole lava field interacting with the river.

  • Composition ideas:

    • Hraunfossar: Frame wide shots to emphasize the horizontal line of waterfalls pouring out from the mossy lava field. Use nearby rocks or tree branches for natural framing. Use tele lenses to frame specific section of the waterfall.

    • Barnafoss: Focus on the narrow, turbulent rapids. A tighter crop or telephoto shot works well to show water force through the rock arch. Try shooting from the footbridge for symmetry and context.
