💦 Hjálparfoss
🗺️ How to Get There:
Hjálparfoss is located in Þjórsárdalur Valley, just off Route 32. From Route 1, take Route 30 and then 32 heading east toward Þjóðveldisbærinn. A short road leads to the parking area. It’s accessible by regular cars in summer and most of the shoulder seasons, though in winter it may require a 4x4 depending on snow and ice conditions. The waterfall is just a short walk from the parking lot.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Beautiful year-round. Autumn offers striking color contrast with the surrounding birch trees and lava. Winter provides snowy framing and often partial freezing of the falls. Spring and summer bring full flow and green moss for a lush look. The light is best in early morning or late afternoon.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Late afternoon is ideal for light hitting the falls directly. Morning light is more diffused and moody. Overcast days work well for long exposures.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the twin waterfalls and surrounding lava. Tripod and ND filter for long exposures. Drone is optional but can offer unique angles from behind or above the falls, fly carefully due to tight canyon walls and wind.
Composition ideas:
Frame the falls with the lava formations on either side, using the pool in front for reflection if it’s still. Include seasonal elements, snow, autumn leaves, or green moss, to create atmosphere. Drone shots from behind or above reveal the symmetry of the twin falls merging into one pool.
