🛖 Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng (Commonwealth Farmstead)
🗺️ How to Get There:
From Route 32, turn onto Road 327 near Árnes and follow it northeast into the Þjórsárdalur valley. The road is gravel but 2WD accessible in summer, leading first to the Þjóðveldisbærinn replica site, then continuing deeper toward the original archaeological site at Stöng. The replica is located just before the bridge over the Rauðá river. There is a entrance fee to even enter the area of the reconstructed house during summer opening hours (2500 ISK per person which is a bit insane if you ask me)
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best visited in summer (June–September), when the house is open and the valley is green. In early autumn, the surrounding hills turn golden and red. The road is not maintained in winter.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Morning or evening for warm light over the turf roof and backdrop mountains. Midday can also work well for even exposure of the structure.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the turf house and surrounding valley
Telephoto for isolating architectural details like carved doors and wooden beams
Drones are allowed but fly responsibly, avoiding disruption to the quiet setting
Composition ideas:
Frame the turf roof with the valley cliffs or river in the background
Capture interior wooden textures and light shafts if the house is open
Use drone to show turf blending into landscape from above
Shoot from behind the house to get Hekla volcano in frame on clear days
