It is a unique burial site located right on the beach and surrounded by the ocean. Cementerio de Cofete in Fuerteventura was used by the island's earliest inhabitants, who transported the deceased by camel for about 40 km to reach this peaceful resting place.

Wooden crosses, almost all without a name, most bleached by sun and salt, almost all now lying on a pile of stones. All around, nothing but the loneliness of a beach, stretching to the horizon almost without end, and the constant roar of the waves lapping at the shoreline

In the 1990s the area was bordered by a low stone wall, now semi-sanded, and a plaque, in Gothic script, recalls the history of this place and provides a list of alleged tenants; all this to add even more mystery to the thing. The last burial was in 1956.

🇮🇹 E' un luogo di sepoltura unico nel suo genere, situato proprio sulla spiaggia e circondato dall'oceano. Il Cementerio de Cofete a Fuerteventura era utilizzato dai primi abitanti dell'isola, che trasportavano i defunti a dorso di cammello per circa 40 km per raggiungere questo luogo di riposo tranquillo.

Croci di legno, quasi tutte senza un nome, la maggior parte sbiancate dal sole e dalla salsedine, quasi tutte ormai adagiate su un mucchio di sassi. Tutt’intorno, niente altro che la solitudine di una spiaggia, che si estende all’orizzonte quasi senza fine, e il continuo fragore delle onde che si spengono sulla battigia

Negli anni Novanta l’area fu delimitata da un basso muro di pietra, oggi semi-insabbiato, e una targa, in caratteri gotici, ricorda la storia di questo posto e fornisce un elenco di presunti inquilini; tutto ciò per aggiunge ancora più mistero alla cosa.  L'ultima sepoltura risale al 1956.
