The George Black Ferry in Dawson City is a vital link for locals and visitors crossing the Yukon River. It's a charming little boat that shuttles people and vehicles back and forth, offering a scenic and convenient way to get around. Whether you're exploring the historic town or heading out on an adventure, the ferry adds a touch of old-school charm to your Yukon experience.
Eryn's Tips:
The ferry only runs in the summer once the ice on the Yukon River has broken up completely (usually around the May long weekend). It is free and runs 24 hours a day when it's open! If you are visiting Dawson in the winter months, you may be able to cross on the government-maintained ice road, depending on ice thickness and safety!
This is the route to the Top of the World Highway, West Dawson, the golf course and the Yukon River Campground! If you're able, I would highly recommend crossing and driving up the Top of the World as the views are stunning!
It is super fun to camp at the Yukon River Campground and walk onto the ferry. You can walk around all of Dawson City, have a few drinks at the local restaurants and bars, and hitch a ride back home when everything closes at 2:00 am!
