Eryn's Tips:

  • If you are in Dawson City, YOU MUST DO THE SOUR TOE COCKTAIL. I don't make the rules, sorry. It's a shot of whiskey with a human toe in it.. I have done it three times, and you get a certificate when you're done. It may seem gross, but it really isn't that bad. The toe just needs to touch your lips while you drink, and the alcohol kills all the germs, so you'll be okay, I promise!

  • You might be thinking, how did this even come to be a thing? Well, the Sourtoe Cocktail's origins trace back to a legend from the 1920s during prohibition, involving a frostbitten toe and bootlegging brothers. In 1973, the preserved toe was discovered, and the Sourtoe Cocktail tradition began. Over the years, several toes have been used, as they naturally degrade and require replacement. A fine is imposed for swallowing the toe, although a guy actually swallowed the toe one time, and one was even stolen but eventually returned.

  • Fun fact, my dad wants to donate his toes when he dies haha! They actually have quite a few toe donations as it is a big deal in the Yukon and if someone loses a toe in a frostbite or lawnmower accident, they have the option to donate it!
