The Chilkat River in Southeast Alaska is part of a transboundary watershed. The USGS Alaska Science Centre monitors the river's streamflow and water quality to better understand its processes and address environmental concerns. With super gages providing real-time data, they're keeping an eye on this beautiful river to ensure its health and sustainability for future generations to enjoy.
Eryn's Tips:
This is a great spot for a walk along the river, as there is a walking path that follows the water for several kilometres!
You will drive right by the Chilkat on your way into Haines, Alaska, so make sure to stop and look around! You might see some bears or other wildlife!
During November, the Alaska Bald Eagle Festival brings thousands of bald eagles to the Chilkat River for the late salmon run in the river! There will be many opportunities to photograph these amazing animals during this time of year!
