The Haines Highway is a scenic route that connects Haines Junction in the Yukon to Haines, Alaska. It offers breathtaking mountain views, access to hiking trails, and opportunities for camping along the way. Travellers can stop at attractions like Kathleen Lake, Rock Glacier Trail, and St. Elias Lake Trail for outdoor adventures. In Haines, Alaska, visitors can explore the charming town, visit the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Reserve, and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. The Haines Highway is a must-do road trip for nature lovers looking to experience the beauty of the North.

Eryn's Tips:

  • Haines is one of my favourite areas to visit for a quick getaway. The views are amazing, and the vibes are very much "sleepy fishing village". They have all the necessary amenities and plenty of hotel rooms and camping locations for your stay. One of the busiest weekends of the year is the last weekend in May for Haines Beer Fest, when tons of Yukoners cross the border to come and drink beer, so if you are planning a trip around then, it's probably best to book accommodation well in advance.

  • In the fall, you can see massive brown bears at Chilkoot Lake during the salmon run, and in November, you can see thousands of bald eagles along the Chilkat River during the later salmon run. If you like wildlife photography, Haines is an amazing spot to explore.

  • I love walking along the main street in Haines and checking out all the local stores. They have some amazing items made by local artists, and I pretty much always head back home with a few new souvenirs.

  • My favourite restaurant in town is Alpenglow Pizza, and I will usually grab a latte and breakfast from the Mountain Market, but there are many restaurant options open in the summer!

  • You can also book a boat tour that takes you to Juneau, Alaska's capital city. We did this trip many years ago and got to see humpback whales! They were bubble netting, which is a way they catch and eat fish, and we saw several of them all breach the water near our boat. It was an amazing experience, and I recommend it if you have the time!
