Mihintale encompasses a rich tapestry of elements: it is a small city, a historic site revered as the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, a temple, and a mountain. Intriguing, isn't it? Indeed, it is!

You have probably come across the term "Cultural Triangle" in connection with Sri Lanka, denoting the area encompassing the former royal cities of Kandy, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa. While most travelers flock to these UNESCO World Heritage Sites, we suggest veering off the beaten path for a visit to the less touristy Mihintale, a place of profound religious and historical significance.

Legend has it that Mihintale is where the Buddhist monk Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa, ushering Buddhism into Sri Lanka around 243 BCE. Today, it remains a popular pilgrimage destination for locals but tends to be overlooked by tourists. The site is dotted with religious monuments and ancient structures, offering a glimpse into its storied past.

Many of Mihintale's historical sites can be explored without purchasing a ticket. Take, for instance, the Katu Seya Stupa, conveniently situated along the Kandy-Jaffna Highway. (which is not a Highway at all, but that's what it is called :-) Locals often make brief stops here for prayer, though mischievous monkeys may regularly steal offerings. This unique blend of spirituality and wildlife presents an excellent opportunity for photography and contemplation.

Also the grand staircase, likely constructed for meditation, leads to the main temple and is situated outside the museum. Adorned with frangipani trees, it offers a picturesque setting for a climb or for a photoshoot. At the summit, a nominal entry fee grants access to the entire complex, including temples, meditation caves, and the breathtaking view from atop the rock. Brace yourself for a workout, as some claim there are over 1000 stairs to traverse—an ascent that may lead to enlightenment or, at the very least, stunning vistas.

  • The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon, avoiding the midday heat and relishing the enchanting sunset views. Plan 2-3 hours for your visit.

  • The advantage of Mihintale is that it is less extensive and expensive than the historic sites of Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura. Or let's say it this way: It is perfect for those of you who want to experience history but don't want to spend hours looking at old stones.

  • DONT visit on a Poey Day unless you want to share the place with hundreds of pilgrims and experience some deep dive into the culture.

  • DO check out the giant squirrels in the area where the small shops are located at the bottom of the so called meditation stairs.

  • Ride2xplore extra: If you drive a bit further along the Kandy-Jaffna Highway you will find more sites to visit and to explore. Keep your eyes open for black sign boards with white Sinhalese letters. Some sites are not very much develop yet and will give you a real explorer feeling.
