This is one of the easiest waterfalls to visit on the South Coast since it sits just off the Ring Road with a large parking area, restrooms, and clear walking paths. You can experience Skógafoss in just a few minutes, but it’s also worth taking your time (this was one of our favorite waterfalls in Iceland!!)

If you’re up for it, there’s a staircase beside the waterfall that leads to a viewing platform at the top. The climb is short but steep, and the views from above give you a completely different perspective of both the waterfall and the river continuing inland. This is also where the Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail begins.

Because Skógafoss is so accessible, it gets very busy, especially late morning through mid-afternoon when tour buses arrive. If you want fewer people, aim for early morning or later in the evening. Waterproof layers are very helpful here, the mist is stronger than you think, and you’ll get wet if you walk close.

To stand close to the waterfall, you will need to walk on the right side of the riverbank, once the path stops, you will need to walk on the rocks in the river that hug the cliffside and you'll be able to see a spot most visitors miss! But please be careful, the rocks are very slippery and the water is FREEZING!!

$ There is a fee to park in the main parking lot.
