Description:
Stuðlagil Canyon is one of Iceland’s most stunning natural wonders, hidden in East Iceland. The canyon is lined with tall basalt columns, with the turquoise Jökla River flowing dramatically through it. Once mostly unknown, it became accessible after a nearby hydroelectric project lowered the water level, revealing the incredible rock formations. Visitors can view the canyon from a platform on the west side or take a longer hike on the east side for closer, more impressive views. The hike is about 5 km (3 miles) each way, relatively easy, and well worth it for the striking scenery.

Price:
Visiting Stuðlagil Canyon is free. Parking at the west side viewpoint is free, while east side parking may charge a small fee of 500 ISK ($4 USD). Guided tours of East Iceland that include Stuðlagil typically cost $100–150 USD per person.
