The Weißensee is one of my absolute favorite lakes in Austria. What makes it so special is its untouched character – surrounded by mountains and forests, with hardly any buildings along the shore. It feels natural, peaceful and refreshingly authentic.
In summer, the Weissensee is incredibly versatile. You can go hiking along the shoreline, swim in the clear water, or explore the lake by stand-up paddle. One of my favorite ways to experience the Weissensee in summer is to walk along the lakeside path. You can choose one direction, stop whenever you feel like it, jump into the water to cool off and simply enjoy the scenery. At the end of the walk, taking the boat back is a highlight on its own and gives you a completely different perspective of the lake.
In winter, the entire atmosphere changes and the lake transforms into a magical ice-skating paradise. No matter the season, the Weissensee has a unique way of slowing you down and reconnecting you with nature.
Good to know
The Weissensee is best reached by car. Parking is available on the east and west shore (Weißensee Ostufer Parkplatz or parking lot in Techendorf). Once there, you can move around easily on foot, by boat, or on the water itself – depending on the season and your plans.
