If you’re looking for the best sunrise or sunset spots around Lake Tahoe and Truckee, here are seven of my favorites.
1. Donner Lake Overlook
A classic Truckee spot above Donner Lake. The elevated view makes it ideal for watching the sun rise or set over the lake and surrounding mountains.
2. Emerald Bay
One of Tahoe’s most iconic viewpoints. Sunrise or sunset reflects beautifully on the water, with Fannette Island in the middle of the bay.
3. Sand Harbor
On the Nevada side, this scenic beach offers both sunrise and sunset views. Its granite boulders and clear water create perfect reflections.
4. East Shore Bike Trail
This paved trail along the east shore has multiple pull-offs. A short walk from the parking areas brings you right to the water for colorful lake views.
5. Monkey Rock
A short hike near Incline Village leads to broad views of the lake and mountains. Its recognizable rock formation makes for great photos at sunset.
6. Zephyr Cove
Located on the south shore, this spot has open water views toward the west. No hiking required — just find a spot along the shore to enjoy the colors.
7. Cave Rock
A dramatic viewpoint on the east shore. This elevated rock formation provides sweeping views of Lake Tahoe and is especially striking at sunset.
All of these spots are accessible, scenic, and ideal for first-time visitors wanting to experience Tahoe’s beautiful light at dawn or dusk.
