Knowles Mill Circular – A Woodland Walk with Waterfalls, Wildlife & a Splash of History
Tucked away in the Wyre Forest, this 1.5-mile circular walk is full of mini adventures; think forest trails, a historic old mill, wildlife spotting and a brook that’s perfect for paddling. It’s a brilliant blend of nature and history that keeps the kids interested and the grown-ups happy.

Follow our route here

🌲 The Route
Start from Dry Mill Lane car park (DY12 2LX) free parking and straight onto the trail. The first stretch follows a disused railway line (now part of a national cycle route), so it’s smooth, flat and easy-going. After about half a mile, you’ll head right into the forest, winding through ancient oak woodland and following the gentle flow of Dowles Brook.

Keep your eyes peeled; you might spot dippers, kingfishers and even the odd deer if you're lucky. There is a wooden bridge to cross and some uneven paths, so decent footwear is a good shout.

If you've got a buggy, bike or wheelchair then the first half of the route is perfect for these wheels but when it splits off to go down the woods you'll probably be best turning round and going back down the disused track.

🏛️ Knowles Mill
One of the walk’s highlights is Knowles Mill; a hidden little gem tucked alongside the brook. It’s an old 18th-century grain mill you can actually go inside. It still has some of the original machinery, and it’s a great stop to mix a bit of history into the adventure.

💦 Perfect Paddling Spot
Just beyond the mill, there’s a shallow section of the brook that’s ideal for paddling. Great for cooling off on a warm day, for the dog to swim or just an excuse to get your socks soggy.

  • Distance: About 1.5 miles

  • Terrain: Mix of flat and bumpy woodland paths; can get muddy after rain

  • Facilities: No toilets or any facilities on the trail nearest ones are in Bewdley

  • Dogs: Welcome keep on a lead in some areas

  • What to wear: The first section is a gravel track, what used to be an old railway line turned cycle route so that parts fine for shoes but when you turn off into the woods it can get a bit muddy and bumpy so sturdy shoes are best for that part.
