Mattmarksee is a reservoir located in the breathtaking Saas Valley of the Canton of Valais, Switzerland. The water body was created after the Mattmark dam was built by construction workers from 1960 to 1965. The surface area of the lake is 1.76km2 and has a depth of 93 meters at its lowest point. The panoramic view of the Rimpfischhorn and Stellihorn massifs surrounding the lake makes it particularly stunning. Visitors can also look out for the highest peak visible from the lake - The Strahlhorn which stands majestically at 4190 meters above sea level.
There is a winter hike leading up to the lake.
HIKE DETAILS:
Start: Saas Almaggel, Dorfplatz. The hike is marked with 875 on the switzerlandmobility app. It is an in and out hike, so you will need to hike back the same way where you can from.
Distance 14 km with 540 meters of elevation gain.
Since the entire hike is in a valley, be prepared for the morning shades which can make the area very cold. When I hiked it was -19 C degrees and we didn't see the sun for about 1,5 hours.
The lake can be visited in summer too. In summer a bus goes up to Mattmark bus stop where you can enjoy the view, hike around or stop at the restaurant.
