The Schreckhornhütte SAC (2527m) is a fantastic mountain getaway in the Bernese Oberland, surrounded by breathtaking glaciers and high alpine peaks. It offers 65 beds, 20 emergency shelter spots. The hike to get to Schreckhornütte is not for the faint hearted. It is rated a T4 hike which means it includes lots of exposed sections, chains, ladders etc.

Also it is long, totally doable if you have enough stamina, I did the entire trip in aa day but I was wishing to stayed the night. not just because the hike is long but because the views to the glaciers and massive peaks like Schreckhorn, Starhlegghorn and Fiescherhorn.

HIKE DETAILS:

Start: Pfingstegg cable car station in Grindelwald. You make your way towards Bäregghütte where you can take a quick break, grab some snack and prepare yourself for the tour.

To get to the hut you will need to hike 4-5 hours from the cable car station, therefore I advise you to get there at opening times around 8 am. (Check website for the current opening hours) Elevation gain will be 1380 meter with 16 km distance, which is a lot, take plenty of water and snack with you.

There are chains and two ladders plus some areas where you need to 'rock climb' without any support. when it rains I don't recommend going out.

Once on the trail, you will find barely any people, it is truly one of those insane places which takes you away with it' views. The melting glaciers in all directions, the big mountains, the beautiful valley. INSANE. This hike certainly made it to my favourite list.

TIP: bring cash with you if you plan to purchase something at the hut, they don't accept card and twint (Swiss app for sending money) only work if you run down the hill and catch connection somewhere.

TIP2: always tell someone where you are headed especially on a T4 hike.
