🪨 Abstract Mud Cracks in Skaftá River
🗺️ How to Get There:
Drive the F208 (Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri) until you reach the junction with F235. Turn right onto F235 and continue toward Langisjór, eventually you will find a track going to the Sveinstindur mountain hut. Just before the hut, look for the cracked mudflats on the eastern banks of the Skaftá river. A high-clearance 4x4 is required, this is remote and rough terrain, not suitable for standard vehicles.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
July to September, when the Highlands are accessible and the riverbanks have dried to reveal extensive mud textures. Late summer offers better light and fewer high water levels.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Midday sun for hard shadows that define the cracks
Early morning for soft contrast and layered textures
Evening light for long shadows and warm tones
Recommended gear:
Drone for abstract top-down compositions
Polarizer filter to control glare and water reflections
Extra drone batteries, you'll want them!
Composition ideas:
Shoot top-down with no horizon to emphasize texture and patterns
Fly diagonally across the riverbank for leading lines
Contrast muddy browns with blue meltwater for visual depth
