🌋 Rauðibotn Crater

📍 How to Get There:
Rauðibotn is located deep in the southern Highlands of Iceland, near the Eldgjá fissure. To reach it, drive F210 (Fjallabaksleið syðri) from either the west (near Mælifell) or the east (from Álftavatn/F208 junction). The final approach involves crossing rivers and rough terrain, a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is absolutely required.

From the parking area (often just before the marked river crossing), it’s a nice hike to the edge of the crater. You’ll find stunning views of the bright red volcanic cone surrounded by mossy lava and winding rivers, ideal for aerial photography.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
July to early September, when F-roads are open and conditions are safest.
Spectacular in late summer when the moss is greenest and contrasts with the deep red crater walls.

📸 Photography Tips

Best time of day:

  • Golden hour adds warm highlights to the red crater and casts soft shadows for texture

  • Midday is ideal for aerial work when shadows are minimal and colors pop

  • Overcast days enhance the color contrast between moss and the red rock

Recommended gear:

  • Drone for top-down or side-profile crater shots

  • Wide-angle lens for capturing scale from the rim

  • Telephoto for compressing elements like rivers, cones, and distant peaks

Composition ideas:

  • Fly the drone straight above the crater to showcase its perfect circular shape and red rim

  • Capture the contrast between the red crater and mossy green surroundings

  • Use nearby rivers and lava fields as leading lines from ground-level

  • Include hikers or vehicles for scale in an otherwise surreal landscape
