Tunnel Mountain is a quick hike right in the heart of Banff — and it’s one of the best ways to get a bird’s-eye view of the town without spending a whole day on a trail. it’s an easy favorite for first-time visitors, and anyone looking for a rewarding climb with minimal commitment. It does get crowded so we recommend starting this trail early in the morning or later in the evening.
The trailhead starts just a few minutes from downtown Banff, making it super accessible. The hike is about 4.3 km round-trip with around 265 meters of elevation gain. It follows a well-maintained switchback trail through the forest. It’s a steady uphill, but totally manageable — especially if you take your time and enjoy the lookout points along the way.
As you climb, views open up over the Bow Valley, the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, and eventually, a sweeping panorama of the Bow River, Mount Rundle, and Cascade Mountain. At the summit, there’s a wide, rocky ledge perfect for sitting back and taking it in.
Tunnel Mountain is great year-round — in the summer, it’s lush and green, while in winter, it becomes a snowy (yet still doable) adventure with proper footwear. It’s also one of the few Banff hikes where you’ll likely get cell service the whole way, making it safe and beginner-friendly.
