Maligne Lake is one of the most beautiful and photographed lakes in the Rockies. It has crystal-clear turquoise water, towering snow-capped peaks, and that iconic little island known as Spirit Island. Located about 45 km from Jasper townsite, the drive to Maligne Lake is a scenic adventure in itself. Along the way, you’ll pass Medicine Lake and have a good chance of spotting wildlife — black bears, elk, and bighorn sheep are common sights on this road.
Once you arrive, you’re greeted by a stunning alpine lake that stretches for 22 km, framed by rugged peaks and lush forest. There’s plenty to do here depending on your vibe:
Boat cruises (BOOK IN ADVANCE) are the most popular activity, taking you down the lake to Spirit Island — a tiny, sacred place for the Stoney Nakoda people, and easily one of the most beautiful spots in the Rockies.
Canoe or kayak rentals are available if you’d rather paddle at your own pace.
There are also several easy hiking trails, like Maligne Lake's Bald Hills Trail, offering beautiful views and quieter forest surroundings.
The Maligne Lake Chalet and day lodge have food, coffee, and restrooms, so you can refuel after exploring.
There is a large, free parking lot at the lake near the lodge and docks. In peak summer months, it can fill up by mid-morning, so arriving early or late in the day is a good idea. The area has washrooms, a gift shop, and dining options.
