Sunwapta Falls is located just off the Icefields Parkway about 55 km south of Jasper. It’s an easy stop that gives great views for minimal efforts. The upper falls are just a short walk from the parking lot (free parking), where the Sunwapta River plunges into the canyon. What makes it especially beautiful is the tiny pine-covered island right above the mouth of the falls — it’s one of the most iconic photo spots along the parkway.
Most people stop at the upper falls, but if you have time, follow the short trail (about 1.5 km round trip) down to the lower falls. The crowds thin out quickly, and you get a peaceful forest walk with multiple viewpoints over smaller pools. It’s best in early summer when glacial melt feeds the river, creating maximum flow and mist.
There are interpretive signs near the falls that explain the geology and history of the area, and basic washrooms are available at the parking lot. If you’re hungry or want to stay overnight, Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge is just across the road — a cozy option with a café, cabins, and a rustic mountain vibe.
