Trölladyngja is a striking volcanic peak in the Reykjanes Peninsula, offering panoramic views and a rewarding hike. Well know for its colourful areas very similar to Landmannalaugar.
🚗 Road
Access is via Route 41 (Reykjanesbraut). At the Vatnsleysuströnd junction, turn onto the gravel road marked for Keilir.The gravel road is rough but navigable by most vehicles in summer; smaller cars should proceed slowly. After passing the Keilir parking area, continue left for about 1 km, then turn left again towards Eldborg crater, where parking is available.
❄️ Winter
The gravel road to Trölladyngja is typically closed during winter due to snow and muddy conditions, making the area inaccessible. It's best to plan your visit between late spring and early autumn.

Distance: Approximately 2–4 km round trip
Elevation Gain: Around 260 meters
Duration: 1–2 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
The trail starts near Eldborg crater, ascending through a small ravine or via an easier slope on the northeast side. The path is unmarked, so a GPS or map is recommended. From the summit, you can enjoy views of Keilir, Grænadyngja, Sogin, and even Reykjavík and Snæfellsnes on clear days. For a longer hike, consider extending to Grænadyngja and the geothermal area Sogin.

There are no facilities at the trailhead or along the hike. Ensure you bring sufficient water, snacks, and any other necessities.
📸 Photo Tips
Sunrise and sunset offer the best lighting for photography, casting beautiful hues over the volcanic landscape. The summit provides excellent panoramic shots, and the colorful geothermal areas nearby add vibrant contrasts.
