Skútustaðagígar is a row of pseudo-craters in North Iceland near Lake Mývatn. These crater-like formations were created by steam eruptions during a volcanic eruption, not actual lava. The area is surrounded by wetlands and is great for birdwatching.
🚗 Road: Paved
🅿️ Parking: Free (next to visitors centre)
🚶Distance: A 20min walk around the area
❄️ Winter: If there's a lot of snow, the paths aren't cleared so this may not be worth it.
📸 Photo tip: Honestly I don't find this location that interesting unless you fly a drone. Drones are forbidden in the summer, but you can fly here in the winter and get some amazing shots of the craters from above.
Don't forget to visit ice cream shop next to it with local made ice cream!
Visitor centre next to it is also a great place to source information and they have an little free exhibition there as well.
🚁 Drones: Many locations around Mývatn are protected or locally sensitive. Mývatn is a red-light location for recreational drone use under the current Nature Conservation Agency rules, but you may be able to get a verbal permission from a ranger (info centre) during winter/shoulder season months.
