Hengifoss Waterfall is a must-see spot in East Iceland, known for its stunning 128-meter drop and unique red clay and black basalt rock formations.
🚗 Road: Paved
🅿️ Parking: 1.000 isk (via checkit.is )
🚶Distance: 6km/3.7mi / 2-3hrs
🚁 Drones: Not listed as a protected-area drone permit site, but don't fly in busy times of the day or close to the cliffs (bird nesting area)
❄️ Winter: Can be access, but could be difficult if there's a lot of snow / icy trail (the waterfall might be frozen, too making it less impressive)
📝 Notes : I was able to get all the way to the bottom of the waterfall which was a fun experience. Bu you will need to cross the stream and navigate through the slippery rocks
🥾 Trail: https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/hengifoss-cascada-colgante-185283192
On the way back cross the bridge and hike back down on the other side of the gorge to add a bit of variety - it won't add much more distance to your hike
