Skeiðarársandur is a massive area of black sands stretching from Skeiðarárjökull to the sea, covering 1300 km². It was formed by glacial rivers carrying material from sub-glacial volcanic eruptions in Vatnajökull. The landscape changes from gravelly near the glacier to sandy and clay-like at the coast. Oh, and don't forget about the iconic Skeiðarárbrú bridge, which marked the opening of Iceland's ring road back in '74.

  • You can also get another great view at Lómagnúpur mountain and the road in front of it.
