South Lake, located in the Eastern Sierra just south of Bishop, is a stunning alpine reservoir nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada. Known for its clear, turquoise waters and dramatic mountain backdrop, it’s a favorite destination for fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, as well as for picnicking and camping along its shoreline. The surrounding area offers several hiking trails that wind through sagebrush, aspen groves, and granite outcroppings, giving visitors plenty of ways to explore the high-country scenery. With easy access via paved roads and multiple campgrounds nearby, South Lake is both a peaceful retreat and an outdoor adventure hub for anglers, paddlers, and anyone seeking the quiet beauty of California’s high desert lakes.
This is easily one of the most beautiful places we visited in the area.
