Hot Creek Geological Site, located just south of Mammoth Lakes, is a striking natural wonder where steaming turquoise pools and bubbling vents sit dramatically within a canyon carved by the Owens River. This geothermal hotspot offers a glimpse into the volcanic forces still active beneath the Eastern Sierra. Visitors can explore the area via a short, 0.6-mile out-and-back trail that descends into the canyon for closer views of the steaming waters and mineral-stained rocks. Though the hot springs are beautiful, they’re too dangerous for swimming—temperatures and conditions can change suddenly. The site is easily accessible and offers several viewpoints, making it a must-see stop for photographers, geology enthusiasts, and anyone wanting to experience one of Mammoth’s most fascinating natural features.
