The Black Arch Tree is a notable giant sequoia near the Congress Trail in Sequoia National Park’s Giant Forest, best known for the large, dark fire scar that arches through its base allowing you to walk through it. The hollowed opening was created by repeated low-intensity fires, which the tree survived thanks to its thick, fire-resistant bark. Like many sequoias in this area, it’s not famous for being the biggest or tallest, but for clearly showing how fire has shaped and sustained these trees over thousands of years.
