The Punta Gorda Lighthouse, located along the Lost Coast of California, was built in 1911 and first lit in 1912. Due to its remote location, it became too costly to maintain after World War II, leading to its deactivation in 1951. Known as the "Alcatraz of Lighthouses," this historic site is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is accessible via a 6.5-mile hike from Matthole Beach (Lost Coast Trailhead). Despite being closed, the reinforced concrete tower and oil house still stand as reminders of its past glory.
