Mono Lake is one of California’s most otherworldly landscapes — a vast, ancient saline lake more than a million years old, surrounded by dramatic Eastern Sierra scenery. The South Tufa Area, located along the lake’s southern shore, is the best place to see Mono Lake’s famous tufa towers — bizarre, spiky limestone formations that rise from the water’s surface. A short, easy trail loops through the formations and down to the shoreline, offering incredible sunrise and sunset views as the light reflects off the still, salty waters. The area is managed by the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve, and while swimming is allowed, the lake’s high salinity makes it more of a float than a swim. It’s open year-round, though the best time to visit is from late spring through fall when access roads are clear and temperatures are mild.
