Penguin Rock in Joshua Tree National Park is a unique rock formation that, as the name suggests, resembles a penguin standing tall among the desert landscape. Located in the Jumbo Rocks Campground area, this quirky geological feature is a favorite among hikers and photographers looking for fun and unusual rock shapes. While there’s no official trail leading directly to Penguin Rock, it can be reached via a short walk and a bit of light scrambling from campsite 20. The formation is especially striking in the soft light of sunrise or sunset when shadows accentuate its distinct penguin-like silhouette. Like many of Joshua Tree’s rock features, it’s a testament to the park’s incredible natural erosion and whimsical shapes, making it a worthwhile stop for those exploring the area.

Due to the need to walk through or near campsites in the campground, be respectful of those who are camping.
