This one is not for beginners — but if you’re up for a challenge, it’s a really fun one.
EEOR (East End of Rundle, as locals call it) is a steep and demanding scramble right above Canmore. It’s about 5.3–5.8 km round trip with roughly 800–830 m of elevation gain, and honestly… it goes straight up from the start.
You’ll climb through the forest first, but don’t get too comfortable — it quickly turns into loose scree, rocky sections, and scrambling where you’ll be using your hands to get up. It’s one of those hikes where you feel like you’ve earned every single meter.
I’ve done EEOR twice so far, and it’s one I’d definitely do again. It’s tough, but in a good way.
Once you get to the top, you’re rewarded with unreal 360° views over the Bow Valley, Ha Ling Peak, and out toward the Spray Lakes. It’s one of the best viewpoints around Canmore if you’re willing to put in the work.
Coming down is where you need to be careful. The scree is loose, it’s easy to lose your footing, and there are multiple paths that can lead you slightly off route if you’re not paying attention. It’s not the kind of hike you want to rush.
Good shoes are a must, and if you’re not comfortable with exposure or scrambling, this might not be the one for you.
Also worth knowing: you’ll need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to park at the trailhead.
If you’re looking for something short, steep, and a bit more adventurous than your typical hike — this is a solid one. Just don’t underestimate it.
