If you’re looking for a short but intense scramble with one of the most iconic views in the Rockies, the route up Tower of Babel above Moraine Lake is a serious challenge for its distance.

This is not a hike — it’s a steep scramble from start to finish. You’ll begin along the Consolation Lakes trail before breaking off onto an unmarked route that quickly turns into a loose scree climb. The stats don’t look like much on paper — roughly 2.5–3 km round trip with about 450–500 m of elevation gain — but don’t underestimate it. Most people take around 2–4 hours round trip, and it feels way harder than the numbers suggest.

The terrain is very loose, with constant scree and rockfall potential, and there are sections where you’ll be using your hands. It’s also quite exposed, which I personally found challenging — especially on the descent when everything feels even steeper and more unstable. This is definitely one where you need to be comfortable with scrambling and staying focused the entire time.

The reward though? Unreal. From the top, you get that straight-down view over Moraine Lake with its insane turquoise color, plus the full Valley of the Ten Peaks laid out in front of you — one of the best viewpoints in the Rockies for the effort.

Important: this is an unofficial route, no markings, and Moraine Lake access requires a shuttle (no personal vehicles) in peak season.

Short, brutal, exposed — but if you’re up for it, this is one of those scrambles you won’t forget.
