If you’re up for one of the most rewarding hikes in the Rockies, the trail to Sentinel Pass starting from Moraine Lake is an absolute classic. The full hike is about 11–12 km round trip with roughly 700–750 m of elevation gain, usually taking 4 to 6 hours depending on pace and how long you spend at the top.
The trail begins with a series of steady switchbacks right from Moraine Lake, gaining elevation quickly before opening up into Larch Valley — which is especially unreal in fall when the larches turn bright gold (late September is peak). From there, you continue through alpine terrain toward the final push: a steep, rocky climb up to Sentinel Pass, where you’re rewarded with panoramic views over both Larch Valley and Paradise Valley.
If you want to extend the adventure, you’ve got a few solid options from here:
Continue toward Paradise Valley → turn it into a point-to-point hike (you’ll need to arrange transportation)
Scramble up Mount Temple (advanced) → one of the most famous scrambles in the Rockies, but only for experienced hikers
Explore higher viewpoints beyond the pass for even more alpine views
Important to know: Moraine Lake access is restricted — you’ll need to take a shuttle or transit (no personal vehicles)during the main season. Also, this is bear country, so carrying bear spray is essential.
It’s a challenging hike, especially that final climb, but this is one of those trails where everything comes together — iconic views, changing landscapes, and a summit that actually feels earned.
