Just off the Icefields Parkway, Waterfowl Lakes is one of those stops that feels almost too perfect to be real. Located about 1 hour north of Lake Louise and just south of Saskatchewan Crossing, it’s right along one of the most scenic drives in the world — and you don’t even have to hike to get a great view. The lakes are glacier-fed, giving them that bright turquoise color, with dramatic peaks like Mount Chephren rising straight up behind them.
There are actually two lakes — Lower and Upper Waterfowl Lake — and both are worth stopping for. The lower lake is visible right from the roadside, while a short, easy 5–10 minute walk from the campground takes you to the upper lake, which is usually quieter and even more scenic.
If you want to do more than just stop for photos, this is a great place to picnic, paddle, or just hang out by the water. There’s also a campground right there, making it an amazing overnight spot along the Icefields Parkway. For hikers, this area connects to longer backcountry routes deeper into the Rockies, but most people come for the easy access and views.
It’s not as famous as Peyto or Lake Louise — but honestly, that’s part of the appeal. Less crowded, just as beautiful, and one of the best quick stops you can make on the drive.
Don’t forget the Park Pass.
