Svartifoss is a waterfall in Skaftafell, part of Vatnajökull National Park, and it’s best known for the dark basalt columns that frame the waterfall. It’s one of the most popular hikes in the park, but it’s still very manageable for most people!
To reach Svartifoss, you’ll hike from the Skaftafell Visitor Center. The path is well-marked and maintained, but it does gain a little bit of elevation and includes some uphill sections, so expect a moderate hike rather than a flat walk.
You do not need a 4×4 to get here. The road to Skaftafell is fully paved, and there’s a large parking area near the visitor center.
Once you reach the waterfall, there’s a viewing area at the base where you can clearly see the basalt columns. The area can be busy during midday, especially in summer, so visiting earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon can make your experience more enjoyable!
Here is the hike route (the route includes other waterfalls as well) :)
