Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most popular waterfalls, and a highlight of the Golden Circle. You’ll find it along the Hvítá River in southwest Iceland, and it’s easy to include on a day trip from Reykjavík and the roads are very well-maintained, even in winter.
There is no entrance fee, and parking is free at two main lots: the upper parking area near the visitor center and a smaller lower lot closer to the canyon edge. Both lots have clearly marked paths that lead you to excellent lookout points. There’s a visitor center next to the upper parking that has restrooms, a café, and a small souvenir shop, which is a nice place to warm up and eat after exploring.
*The restrooms in the parking lot are paid, but the restrooms inside the Visitor Center are completely free to use!
From the upper viewpoint you get an amazing perspective of both tiers, while the lower viewing platform brings you closer to the water (note: the path to the lower platform is often closed in winter due to ice).
Gullfoss is open year-round and is always free to visit. In winter the falls can look frozen and wintry, but trails can be very icy or slippery, so waterproof boots and good traction are helpful if you visit when conditions are cold!
