Ljótipollur is the striking crater lake tucked into the Highlands near Landmannalaugar that you’ll see talked about a lot, and for good reason. The deep blue water surrounded by red volcanic slopes is unlike most landscapes in Iceland, and the mix of colours makes it worth the stop if you’re already headed to Landmannalaugar!
To get here you do need a 4×4 (please do not attempt to get here if you do not have a 4x4 or were not approved to drive on F-roads) and summer access since it sits in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve along the F-roads, with the site only open when the Highlands are passable (usually mid-June through early autumn). You’ll see a small intersection of F225 and F208, most people park there and hike up to Ljótipollur on foot. The walk from that pull-off to the crater rim takes about 30 minutes and is not difficult, once you’re up there you can walk around the rim if you want more angles and views.
If you’re feeling adventurous and want a full-day experience, you can also start hiking from the main Landmannalaugar campground and make a loop to the crater and back through the Highlands terrain, this longer hike can be over 9 miles round-trip and take several hours, but it’s a beautiful way to see more of the area.
There are no facilities at the crater itself, so bring water, snacks, and good layers before you head out. Since it’s off the main loop of Landmannalaugar attractions, Ljótipollur tends to feel quieter and less crowded, even on busier Highland days.
