Eldborg is a beautifully shaped volcanic crater on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and one of the easiest crater hikes in Iceland. The round-trip hike is about 3.8 miles and usually takes 1.5–2 hours, depending on pace and how long you spend at the top. The trail is easy to follow, but it does cross a rocky lava field, so good shoes are important and you’ll want to watch your footing.
The final climb up the crater is short but a lot steeper and looser, with chains installed to help on the ascent and descent. Once on top, you can walk around the rim and look down into the crater, as well as spot other smaller craters in the surrounding lava field. The views from the rim are beautiful!
Parking is at Snorrastaðir farm, just off Road 54, and no 4×4 is required to reach the trailhead. Eldborg is a protected area, so stick to the marked path and avoid stepping on fragile lava and moss.
