Bláhylur is a bright blue volcanic crater lake located along F208 in Iceland’s Highlands, near Landmannalaugar. It’s an easy roadside stop once you’re already in the area, and you don’t need to hike to see it, you can walk right up to the rim from the parking area.
This stop does require a 4×4 vehicle, as F208 is an F-road and is typically only open during summer (usually late June through September, depending on conditions). There’s no entrance fee and no facilities here, so plan accordingly and don’t expect restrooms or services nearby.
Plan to spend about 20-30 minutes here. If you want a slightly higher viewpoint, there’s a short climb up the crater edge that gives you a better look at the lake and surrounding Highlands.
Bláhylur is a great add-on if you’re already driving F208 or heading to or from Landmannalaugar, and it pairs well with other nearby crater lakes in the area. It’s quick, scenic, and easy to fit into a Highlands day without adding much time.
