Axlafoss is a small but beautiful waterfall tucked inside a narrow canyon along the Hólmsá river in Iceland’s Highlands. Reaching it requires a short detour off F210, followed by a drive down a dirt track and a short walk to the canyon rim. The waterfall itself is about 26ft tall and can only be viewed from above, since there are no safe paths down into the canyon. While it’s not a major stop, Axlafoss makes a great detour when traveling through this area, especially if you’re already visiting nearby places like Rauðibotn. The drive here involves a couple of small river crossings, so make sure road conditions are safe before attempting the route (use https://umferdin.is/en to check current road conditions).
