Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River is one of the easiest ways to soak in a natural hot spring without heading deep into the Highlands. Instead of a pool, you’ll be bathing directly in a geothermally heated river, where the water gradually gets warmer the farther you walk upstream.
To get there, you’ll hike about 2 miles each way, which usually takes 45–60 minutes one way. Parts of the trail are steep and a bit narrow. The trailhead starts near Reykjadalur Café, and while the parking lot often looks busy, the river itself is long enough that people spread out once they arrive. If you want the quietest experience, go early in the morning!
One thing to be aware of is that this area is known for midges, especially in warmer weather. They’re harmless but can be very annoying, so bring bug spray and a hat.
This is a great option if you want a hot spring experience that still feels adventurous without requiring a 4×4 or a full day commitment.
