Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe and a must visit while in Iceland!
There are two ways into Dettifoss:
West Entrance (Road 862): You’ll find the easiest drive (fully paved from the Ring Road), a large free parking area, toilets, and well-marked paths that lead to a couple of great viewing spots. This is the option most travelers choose and works in all seasons, even winter because the road doesn’t close. From here, the paths are straightforward, and you can also follow signs to the nearby Selfoss waterfall if you want a second stop.
The East Entrance (Road 864): Feels a bit more adventurous. The gravel road isn’t an F-road, but it’s a lot rougher and you’ll need to take it slow with a normal car. The payoff is a more dramatic, sweeping perspective over Dettifoss and the canyon. Views from this bank are stunning!
No matter which side you choose, the walk down to the waterfall itself is pretty short and doable for most people, expect about a 10–20 minute walk on uneven ground and rock paths to reach the best viewpoints. Some spray is almost guaranteed, so waterproof layers and good shoes are worth it.
Both entrances are free to visit and the west side has more facilities (toilets open year-round), while the east side can feel more remote.
We personally visited Dettifoss through the West Entrance with hopes of viewing Dettifoss from the viewing platform, but unfortunately it is no longer there because of a landslide. This was in July 2025 and we have not seen any updates on when the path will reopen. You can still get great views of Dettifoss from the West Entrance, but to get the best views possible we would recommend going to the East side if you're up for it! :)
