Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon was one of our favorite stops in Iceland, and it’s an easy, must-do detour right off the Ring Road. The canyon was carved by the glacial Fjaðrá River into beautiful, twisting walls that are very photogenic from almost anywhere along the rim.

Getting here couldn’t be easier, if I remember correctly the road is mostly paved, but a small portion is a well-maintained gravel road. The road leads to a parking lot just before the canyon trailhead, and cars of all types can usually access it in summer. There is also a restroom here, it's just up the path from the parking lot if you're heading towards the trail!

From the parking lot a well-marked, easy trail runs along the canyon’s edge for about 1.2 miles round-trip. We took around 30–60 minutes to walk to the main viewpoints. You’ll gain a little elevation early on, but overall the path is straightforward, with multiple places to stop for photos.

There are several viewing platforms along the route, which make it very easy to see the canyon and take some amazing pictures!

Fjaðrárgljúfur has become really popular in recent years (not only because it's beautiful, but Justin Bieber filmed a music video here), so arriving early or later in the day helps you beat some of the crowds.
