Rauðibotn Crater is one of those hidden highland spots that feel completely untouched. Tucked into the Fjallabak region, this colorful crater stands out immediately with its deep red slopes and vibrant green moss set against the stark volcanic landscape around it.
The full hike takes about 1-2 hours round-trip. The trail is not marked, but you can follow the tracks, which are pretty easy to find!
Getting here does require some planning. The access roads are F-roads, which are only open in summer, and you’ll need a proper high-clearance 4x4. Be sure to check road and weather conditions before heading out, as the highlands can change quickly and drive times are often slower than expected (use https://umferdin.is/en to check current road conditions).
If you're approaching from the Mælifell side, the Hólmsá river crossing can be one of the trickier parts of the drive, and it is a major river. The crossing location isn’t always obvious, and water levels can vary, so extra caution is very important. If you're unsure, wait and watch another capable vehicle cross first. There is also very limited cell service in this area.
For an easier approach, you can come from the southern highlands via F208 and F210, which can avoid the main river crossing depending on your route.
