Langisjór is a remote glacial lake deep in the Highlands, right up against the western edge of Vatnajökull National Park. It’s one of the largest natural lakes in this part of Iceland!
Getting to Langisjór is definitely an adventure, the best access is via F-roads like F208 and F235, and you’ll absolutely need a 4×4 because these routes are rough and gravelly and include river crossings on your way in. These roads are only open in summer months when the Highlands are passable, and you should be comfortable driving on mountain tracks and fording small rivers.
You can either take in the beautiful lakeside views or you can go hike to nearby Sveinstindur, which rewards you with incredible vantage points over the lake and surrounding Highlands if the weather is clear. There are also longer multi-day hiking options around portions of the lake for experienced hikers.
Langisjór is very remote, with hardly any facilities, there’s a small campsite and toilets near the lake, but that’s about it, so plan to be self-sufficient with water, food, layers, and navigation tools. The payoff is a truly untouched part of Iceland that most visitors never see!
